Melatonin is a naturally occurring hormone that encourages sleep. It is produced by the pineal gland found in the brain.

The body produces melatonin just after it gets dark, with the highest levels of melatonin produced in the early hours of the morning (2-4 a.m.). Then, melatonin levels diminish in preparation for waking.

It has been found that the level of melatonin in the body reduces with advancing age and in some medical conditions.

Taking melatonin supplements adds to your body’s natural supply of the hormone. This can help you get to sleep and improve the quality of your sleep when taken appropriately.

Short-term studies suggest that melatonin is relatively safe in most patient groups. Melatonin in supplement form is only recommended for short-term usage due to the lack of long-term safety data.

Commonly reported side effects of melatonin include vivid dreams and nightmares, dizziness, daytime sleepiness, headache, short-term feelings of depression, irritability, and stomach cramps.

It is always advisable to have a check with a doctor or pharmacist before starting on melatonin supplements, especially if you are on other long-term medications or underlying medical conditions.

Unlike traditional sleeping pills, melatonin has no addictive potential.

Melatonin is a supplement and is frequently used as a sleep aid. They help you fall asleep, improve sleep quality and increase sleep duration. However, they do not appear to be as effective as traditional sleeping pills like benzodiazepines and Z-drugs (e.g. Xanax and Zolpidem respectively).

Circadin is registered with the HSA as a therapeutic product, this means that it is used for the treatment of insomnia as they have extensive clinical studies to support its efficacy and safety. As Circadin undergoes strict regulations by the HSA, its quality as a product is also guaranteed.

For other melatonin products, they are not extensively studied for their efficacy and safety and can only be used to promote and enhance sleep effects.
