Understanding Period Delay Treatment

Medicines that delay periods can become a woman’s best friend when planning to enjoy a hassle-free holiday.

How Does Period Delay Treatment Work?

Period delay treatment typically involves the use of pills containing synthetic hormones like ethinyl estradiol and progestin. Ethinyl estradiol and progestin are hormones similar to the natural female hormone estrogen and progesterone respectively.

The body sheds the lining of the uterus, causing bleeding, during a menstrual cycle. A decrease in the levels of estrogen and progesterone in the body signals the start of this process.

Period delay medication involves introducing estrogen and/or progesterone in the body to maintain a higher level of these hormones. This would prevent the uterine lining from shedding, postponing your menstrual period. Menstrual bleeding resumes when the respective hormone levels drop after stopping the pills.

Is Delaying Period Safe for My Body?

Research has consistently shown that period delay is safe and does not cause any long-term problems.

In fact, pregnant women do not experience periods for the entire nine months or the duration of the pregnancy.Breastfeeding women may not have a period for up to two years, depending on how often they breastfeed their baby.

If you do not wish to conceive, it is not medically necessary to experience menstrual bleeding. Always discuss with your doctor if medicine to delay menses is suitable for you.

If you plan to conceive, delaying your menses with medicines does not affect your fertility once you stop taking them. Some doctors may suggest having a period at least once every three months to shed the uterine lining. Always consult with your doctor if you intend to delay your period but still wish to conceive.

Medications to Delay Periods in Singapore

DAME: delay menses pills

There are two different types of medications commonly prescribed to delay periods in Singapore. These medications are available at Dame. Depending on your period goals, we navigate this journey with you together.

Birth Control Pills

Contraceptive pills containing a combination of estrogen and progestin can be used for period delay. Always speak to your doctor for advice.

How to Use Birth Control Pills to Delay Menses?

If you are currently taking the combined oral contraceptive pill, you can delay your period by taking the packets back-to-back. For example, if you are taking Microgynon or Yasmin – you would normally take a pill for 21 days, followed by 7 days without pills. During these 7 days, your body experiences a decrease in hormone levels, resulting in menstrual bleeding.

To delay your period, miss out the 7-day break. Begin a new packet of pills immediately after finishing the last pill on the 21st day.

  • Identify the month when you do not want to have a period.
  • Take all the pills in your pack during the month before when you want to skip a period.
  • After finishing the last active pill on the 21st day, do not take a 7-day break.
  • Start Day 1 of your next active pill pack the next day.
  • Keep taking all the active pills in your new pack.
  • When you reach the 7-day break in the second pack, menstrual bleeding will occur unless you repeat the steps above.

Important Considerations

Taking the combined pill continuously to delay menses should not affect how they work as contraceptives. Taking the pill at the same time every day is crucial to prevent pregnancy. Always check with your doctor how you can use your birth control pills safely to delay menses. Our doctors at Dame will advise you accordingly, depending on the type and brand of pill you are taking.

For first-time pill users, it is advisable to understand how your body reacts to the pill before using it for period delay. Spotting or bleeding may occur during the first few months of starting birth control pills. Always speak to your doctor about your period goals.

Norethisterone Tablets

Norethisterone is a synthetic progestin, similar to the natural female hormone progesterone. Taking norethisterone tablets keep the progesterone level in the body higher, this prevents menstruation from taking place. In Singapore, Norethisterone tablets are also known by the name Primolut N.

How to Use Norethisterone Tablets to Delay Menses?

To delay your periods, norethisterone tablets are usually prescribed to be taken one tablet three times a day. Start taking the tablets 3 to 4 days before your period is expected to start. The tablets should be taken for as long as your period is intended to be delayed.

Your period should arrive 2 to 3 days after you stop taking the period delay tablets. Check with your doctor if this does not happen.

Important Considerations

Take norethisterone tablets for no longer than 10-14 days. These tablets can delay a period for about two weeks after its expected date. The effectiveness and timing of the delay can vary from person to person. If your period does not happen 2 to 3 days after you stop taking the tablets, speak to your doctor.

Bear in mind that Norethisterone tablets are not to be used as contraception. You could still get pregnant. If contraception is required, an alternative suitable birth control such as condoms should be used. Also, Norethisterone should not be taken if you are already taking birth control pills.

Period Delay Pills or Tablets – How Do I Choose?

At Dame, we normally ask our ladies two questions:

  • Do you require period delay on an occasional basis or a regular basis?
  • Do you require contraception?

Period delay tablets like norethisterone tablets are safe for most women to use on an occasional basis. However, they are not recommended for regular use. It is also not a contraceptive method.

Period delay pills like combined birth control pills could be a more suitable option if period delay is required on a regular basis. Birth control pills can also help to regulate irregular bleeding and/or heavy periods. This can allow you to predict your cycle more accurately and confer other health benefits

Always share your concerns and goals with our doctors at Dame. Period delay is possible, in a safe and effective way.

Side Effects of Period Delay

Period delay involves the use of pills or tablets containing synthetic estrogen and/or progestin. Common side effects of these period delay pills or tablets include:

  • Spotting or bleeding
  • Breast tenderness
  • Headache or migraine
  • Fluid retention
  • Disturbances in mood and sex drive

Always address your concerns and worries about side effects of period delay with your doctors. Our doctors at Dame will also ask about your health condition and medical history to ensure that the medications prescribed are safe and effective for you.
