In Singapore, the landscape of female pattern hair loss treatment is evolving, with an increasing focus on oral medications. Finasteride, traditionally recognised for its role in treating male pattern baldness and benign prostatic hyperplasia, is gaining prominence as a potential solution for female hair loss. This article serves as your comprehensive guide to understanding and considering finasteride as an oral medication for female hair loss in Singapore.

The Need for Effective Oral Hair Loss Solutions

Since the 1990s, the FDA has only approved topical minoxidil as a treatment for female pattern hair loss. However, about 40% of women do not show improvement with topical minoxidil

Why is Topical Minoxidil Not Effective for My Hair Loss?

Daily consistent application of topical minoxidil for four to six months is essential for successful treatment. If dedicated day-to-day applications do not yield results within six months, there could be a biological explanation for this.

Minoxidil’s efficacy relies on an enzyme activation process in the hair follicle. Men and women exhibit varying levels of this enzyme activity, with higher activity correlating to better minoxidil response. In Singapore’s hot and humid climate, sweat can wash away topical minoxidil, necessitating the search for alternative solutions.

The Convenience of Oral Hair Loss Treatments in Singapore

If you find it difficult to keep up with the day-to-day application of minoxidil, we hear you, and you are not alone. Topical treatments can pose a great challenge for women in Singapore. Sweat can reduce the effectiveness of treatment. Also, for women with longer hair, applying minoxidil specifically onto the scalp can be time-consuming as well.

In our hot and humid climate, we keep ourselves cool and comfortable with products like Airism and lightweight make-up. Recognising the challenges posed by topical treatments, oral medications emerge as a convenient and comfortable hair loss solution for women in Singapore.

Exploring Finasteride for Female Hair Loss

Understanding the Role of Androgens in Female Hair Loss

Healthcare providers are increasingly incorporating oral medications like finasteride treatment to address female pattern hair loss. Male pattern hair loss or male androgenetic alopecia occurs as a consequence of the effects of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) on hair follicles. DHT, a type of male hormone or androgen promotes a process called follicle miniaturisation. Hair follicles undergo a shortened growing phase, resulting in shorter or thinning hair. As more follicles undergo miniaturisation, the hair coverage of the scalp or hair density progressively decreases.

Medical experts propose that a similar process contributes to the development of female pattern hair loss or female androgenetic alopecia. It is theorised that women with female pattern hair loss may have an increased sensitivity of hair follicles to androgens like DHT

Dosage and Usage Guidelines

It is important to understand that there is currently no FDA-approved oral medications for the treatment of female pattern hair loss. Doctors can prescribe finasteride off-label after careful consideration of other treatment options.

Current medical guidelines suggest treatment efficacy with oral finasteride at a dose of 2.5 to 5mg per day. Compared to the 1mg per day dosing in male pattern baldness, this dose is higher. You can expect visible improvements in hair loss within six months of daily oral finasteride.

Is Finasteride Safe for Women?

Despite being a pregnancy category X medication, women can use finasteride treatment under careful consideration and contraception measures. Women who could become or are pregnant should not touch or handle finasteride as it could be absorbed through the skin. If finasteride is used in premenopausal women, reliable contraception during treatment and at least 30 days after the last dose is advised.

Women usually tolerate oral finasteride well. However, researchers have limited data available on the side effects of finasteride in women. Studies in males have included reports of decreased libido and breast swelling or tenderness. Additionally in both men and women, there have been few reports of mood changes such as anxiety and depression.

Alternative Oral Medications for Female Hair Loss

Beyond oral finasteride, there are two alternative treatment options for female pattern hair loss in Singapore. At Dame, we are here to navigate this journey with you.

Spironolactone is an oral medication that works similarly to finasteride for female pattern hair loss. Like finasteride, spironolactone reduces the production of the androgens that contribute to androgenetic alopecia or female pattern hair loss. Doctors often prescribe spironolactone at a low dose, with increments over time. It usually takes about six months or longer to understand how the medication is working. Similar to finasteride, one should not use spironolactone during pregnancy. Reliable birth control is essential for women of childbearing age.

Spironolactone is also used in the treatment of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Read more about it here

Oral Minoxidil

In recent years, emerging evidence suggests that a low dose of oral minoxidil can be safe and effective for the treatment of female pattern hair loss. This is especially useful for women who may experience scalp irritation after application of topical minoxidil. Minoxidil is believed to widen blood vessels resulting in an increase in blood supply to the hair follicles. This helps to boost the supply of nutrients, encouraging hair regrowth. For women looking for a non-hormonal hair loss treatment option, oral minoxidil can be a viable option.
